Women's History Month: 5 Incredible Women in the Outdoors

It’s Women’s History Month! March is a time to recognize the contributions of women throughout history and celebrate their accomplishments in various fields. This year, we’re focusing on bringing more visibility to five incredible women with disabilities that had a huge impact on action sports, conservation, and the outdoors. These five women are truly just a small sampling of the amazing women everywhere that are literally changing the world on a daily basis.

With that being said, check out the list below of six incredible women you may or may not have heard of, and happy Women’s History Month!

  1. Tatyana McFadden is a Paralympic athlete and wheelchair racer. She’s won numerous medals and marathons over the duration of her career. She’s won the Boston, Chicago, London, and New York City marathons. Born with spina bifida, McFadden has overcome incredible challenges and become one of the most successful wheelchair athletes of all time.

  2. Sarah Storey, a British Paralympic athlete is one of the winningest Paralympians of all time. She has 22 medals to her name across cycling and swimming, including an astounding 11 gold medals. She’s competed in 6 Paralympic Games and was a finalist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award.

  3. Caroline Casey is an Irish adventurer and disability rights activist. She once undertook a horseback ride across India to raise awareness for disability inclusion and launched the “Valuable 500” campaign to promote disability inclusion in business.

  4. Greta Thunenberg is a Swedish environmental activist who has gained international attention for her efforts to raise awareness about climate change. She’s spoken at numerous international events and has written a New York Times bestseller book along with other titles.

  5. Michelle Theus is a conservation activist and wheelchair athlete along with being the founder of TrailRiderNation, a nonprofit organization that promotes accessible trails and outdoor experiences for people with disabilities.

  6. Judy Heumann is a globally recognized leader in the disabled community, often referred to as the “Mother of Disability Rights”. She served both the Clinton and Obama administrations as well as being a founding member of the Berkley Center for Independent living and an author, among many other accomplishments.

These women have all made significant contributions to their fields and broken down barriers for people with disabilities. As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we’re making it our mission to continue learning about influential women around the world.
