Indoor Climbing with Beyond Boundaries

Indoor climbing is one of our most accessible adventures. Beyond Boundaries partners with local climbing gyms to ensure that climbing adventures are possible for participants of all abilities.

At Beyond Boundaries, we use a style of climbing called top-rope climbing, which relies on rope systems, harnesses, and trained belayers to keep participants safe.

Assistive Climbing System

Beyond Boundaries offers the Mechanical Advantage System, a specialized rope system that helps people of all abilities reach the top of the climbing wall. This system can provide anywhere from 1% to 100% assistance, depending on each participant's needs. It can be especially beneficial for wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility when appropriate for their climbing goals.

Adaptations

We offer a variety of harness sizes and styles to meet the unique needs of our participants. When you arrive, our team will assess individual needs, discuss climbing goals, and determine the harness that provides the safest and most comfortable fit.

Additional adaptations may include:

  • Side climbers who provide encouragement and assistance for participants who are nervous or need extra support, including those with visual impairments.

  • Laser pointers used from the ground to help guide participants to their next climbing hold.

  • Trained belayers for every climb. All belayers have successfully passed the gym's belay certification test.

  • Helmets are available upon request if head injuries or other safety concerns are a consideration.

Program Guidelines & Scheduling

  • A minimum of 5 climbers and a maximum of 12 climbers is required for each session. This ensures appropriate staff-to-participant ratios and enough belayers to support your group safely.

  • If your group has more than 12 participants, we can discuss scheduling back-to-back sessions or multiple program days.

  • Daytime climbs (10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m.) are typically much less crowded and are often the best option for groups with sensory considerations.

  • Evening climbs (4:30–7:30 p.m.) are also available, though the gyms are generally much busier during those hours.

  • We offer subsidized group rates. Please contact Taylor at taylor@beyondboundariesrva.org to learn more.
