RAFTING the James River
Discover the joys of the rapids on one of our rafting adventures!
We partner with our friends at RVA Paddlesports to offer trips on the James River! We can’t wait to work with you to schedule your group’s rafting trip.
RAFTING with Beyond Boundaries
Every Beyond Boundaries rafting adventure can be shaped around your group’s accessibility needs, experience levels, ages, and other characteristics to create an experience that is welcoming and appropriate for everyone participating.
A Beyond Boundaries staff member will be on the trip to serve as a liaison between your group and the rafting company. We share the relevant information you provide about your group with the guides in advance and work together to accommodate needs as fully as possible.
Where we RAFT
The James River offers two rafting sections: the Upper James and the Lower James. The Upper James features Class I and II rapids, while the Lower James offers more challenging Class III and IV whitewater.
Upper James: Upper James trips typically launch at Pony Pasture and take out at Reedy Creek, although locations may change based on water levels and other conditions. Reedy Creek has an accessible ramp at the take out; however, Pony Pasture does not have an accessible put in. This beautiful section travels beneath the iconic Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Bridge and includes a chance to stop for a snack at Cooper’s Island.
Lower James: Lower James trips typically launch at Reedy Creek, where Upper James trips end, and take out at 14th Street. This route travels through Belle Isle and downtown Richmond and includes larger rapids. Please note that the 14th Street take out includes a series of stairs to exit the river.
If you or members of your group have never rafted before, we generally recommend starting with the Upper James. A Lower James trip can always be planned for a future adventure.
PREPARING FOR YOUR TRIP
Rafting is one of our most logistically involved programs, so we will talk through the details and any important considerations when you book. Please tell us about your group’s specific needs, and we will do our best to help everyone get on the river.
All trips begin at RVA Paddlesports, 1511 Brook Road, Richmond, VA 23220. There, you will get geared up, participate in a safety briefing, and board the bus to the river.
Once on the river, you will bring only your helmet, personal flotation device (PFD) or life jacket, paddle, and refillable water bottle. Wallets, keys, phones, and other valuables should remain at RVA Paddlesports or in your vehicle for safekeeping. A designated trip leader may bring a phone for emergencies, which will be stored in the first aid kit. Necessary medications are welcome to come along on the trip.
Beyond Boundaries looks forward to working with you to create the perfect adventure for your group!
